Giving... It's Great Medicine Campaign

A campaign to raise millions of dollars for health care facilities and equipment was conducted in 2001 and 2002.

Under the theme Giving... it's great medicine! the campaign was conducted by The Health Foundation among municipalities, businesses, organizations and individuals in the area served by the Regional Health Centre.

The undertaking was the largest fund-raising campaign ever in Yorkton and region. It assisted in the construction of an 114,000 square foot multi-purpose health care facility adjacent to the Yorkton and District Nursing Home, purchased new medical equipment and helped fund an education endowment fund.

The multi-purpose facility includes:

  • Long-term care beds;
  • Palliative, respite, convalescent and transitional care beds;
  • Facilities for physiotherapy and occupational therapy
  • Speech therapy unit;
  • Podiatry (foot care) unit;
  • Facilities for community health programs;
  • New dietary food preparation facilities to serve the nursing home and health centre;
  • Facilities for adult day care and senior day care; and
  • Chapel.

The campaign raised $5.4 million of the $15.5 million cost of the new facilities, with the balance paid by the provincial government. The campaign also raised $430,000 for new medical equipment, and $50,000 for an educational endowment fund to help assist the further education of health care professionals.

Under provincial funding regulations, the community is responsible for paying 35 per cent of the cost of new facilities, and is responsible for the total cost of equipment purchases.
