Mammography Campaign

The Health Foundation announced prior to Christmas 2007 that the campaign to raise $800,000 for digital mammography equipment, launched the previous April, was a huge success due to the overwhelming support and generosity of the individuals, businesses, service clubs and community organizations in east central Saskatchewan and beyond.

"We are very pleased to announce that the digital mammography we selected with the other health regions participating in the group buy has been ordered," said Evan Ortynsky, Co-Chair of The Health Foundation.

The mammography equipment is expected to arrive late February. It will take a couple of weeks to make the necessary renovations and properly situate the equipment in the regional health centre. It is expected that digital service will commence mid-March.

"The community was very receptive to our appeals, with a huge number of donations being received. In fact 2,392 donations were made to the digital mammography campaign. That is twice as many donations as we received for the CT Scan; it is the most donations we have ever received for any of our fundraising projects. Clearly this campaign reached people," said Mr. Ortynsky.

The Sunrise Health Region includes 82 cities, towns, villages, rural municipalities, yet contributions were received from 128 communities.

Because of the successful campaign, Sunrise will be one of only a handful of health regions with digital mammography service starting in 2008. Less than 10 per cent of mammography in North America is performed on full-field digital equipment.

Many of The Health Foundation's major events in 2007 raised money for the campaign, including a 36-hour radiothon sponsored by GX94 and TheFox 94.1FM. The proceeds of the annual lottery were directed to digital mammography equipment, as well as the funds raised by the inaugural Charity Road Race.
